FAQ

What should I bring on my trip?
  • Proper footwear–old sneakers or a good pair of water shoes, such as Keens or a lightweight shoe with strap. Flip flops are strongly discouraged, as they offer no protection on slippery and sharp river rock. Trust us, you will thank us later!
  • Sunscreen and a hat to cover your head and neck, especially for hot, sunny days
  • Sunglasses with a strap so they don’t get lost
  • Cooler with water, drinks and snacks (no glass bottles) with a small bag for your trash. Help keep our river clean!
  • A waterproof camera, if you like…
  • Clothing appropriate for the weather… swimwear or lightweight, fast drying clothes, and a change of clothes and towels for after the trip. Yes, you will get wet and possibly dirty!
Is there an age limit, and will I be required to sign a waiver?

Each participant is required to sign a Waiver and Rental Agreement with MKO prior to departing for the river trip. A Parent or legal guardian must sign for participating minors. Children should be 5 years of age and accompanied by an adult at ALL TIMES. Age limits may vary depending on child’s size and experience, and also based on the water level and flow at time of trip.

Can I bring alcoholic drinks on the river?

We discourage drinking alcoholic beverages while on the river for your safety and for the safety and enjoyment of others. We ask that you save the alcoholic beverages for after the float in the comfort of your cabin, hotel room, or campsite. We strive to offer a safe, fun, family friendly environment and alcohol can greatly affect movement, judgement, and behavior.

MKO reserves the right to check coolers and refuse services to anyone who appears to be intoxicated or under the influence of alcohol or other substances. Impaired judgment and the river can be deadly. Please remember that it is ILLEGAL in the State of Virginia to be under the influence in public, and we recommend that you research Virginia laws to avoid any legal troubles.

Do you offer any discounts?

Active members and veterans of the military can ask for a 15% off discount. We offer discounts for church groups, other youth groups. Peak summer weekends and holidays may not be eligible for discounted rates, and we do not combine any discounts with specials.

Do I need a reservation?

Advance reservations are strongly recommended, and are necessary for weekday floats during our slower months. You can call check our website and call our office for information about our current hours. For holidays and peak summer season weekends, reservations are strongly recommended as these trips fill fast and equipment may be rented out.

Is payment expected at time of reservation?

In certain cases, we require full payment at time of reservation.  We may ask for a credit card to hold a reservation. Otherwise, payment in full will be expected prior to the trip departure. If payment is made in advance and a trip needs to be cancelled by MKO due to unforeseen circumstances or acts of God, such as dangerous river conditions, we will offer a trip for another time or issue a refund. Otherwise, we do run our trips rain or shine.

Valuables on the River:

We highly discourage you from taking car/house keys on the river. We will keep these in the office until your return if you prefer. It is best to place your jewelry and other valuables in a safe place before your trip. If brought along, cell phones should be placed in a waterproof bag or case, and attached securely to your body.
